Range Rover L322 problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Land Rover Range Rover L322, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Range Rover L322 problems to check before you buy

  1. Demand timing-chain paperworkOn 2003–2005 BMW-engined trucks, look for receipts for chains and guides, or budget for them. The nylon guides go brittle and break, and owners report failures clustering around 130,000–170,000 miles. On 2010–2012 5.0s, check for tensioner and guide updates. Listen for a rattle on a cold start.
  2. Cycle the air suspension through every heightThe compressor should be barely audible. Grinding means it's on its way out. Watch for slow rises, a lean, or warnings. On 2003–05 trucks, corroded or seized height sensors can stop the truck adjusting without leaving any fault codes.
  3. Test low range and the range-change motorSelect low and back again with the truck stationary. A range-change motor that has seized from lack of use can cost about £1,000 to fix. Make sure Hill Descent Control works too.
  4. Treat 'sealed for life' gearboxes as unsealedHesitant shifts or warning lights point to gearbox trouble. Ask whether the fluid and filter have ever been changed. Atlantic British recommends a service every 60,000 miles on later ZF six-speeds, including the leak-prone valve-body sleeve. A rebuild costs about £2,000 in the UK.
  5. Listen at full lockKnocking at low speed on full lock can mean a front differential problem, and many were recalled. Clonks over bumps from the rear point to perished hub bushes.
  6. Read the codes before and after the driveA pre-purchase diagnostic scan is cheap insurance. Read the codes before and after a long test drive, because sellers can clear faults just before you arrive. Check that every warning light comes on with the ignition and then goes out.
  7. Hunt for water and oilCheck for water in the rear fuse box and under the carpets. Check the M62 for valve-cover and other oil leaks, and look for white coolant streaks around the expansion tank. Expansion tanks fail.
  8. Check the brakes and wheelsL322s are hard on brakes; expect discs and pads about every 30,000 miles. Avoid 22-inch wheels with low-profile tyres, which ride badly and pinch-puncture easily.

The repairs Range Rover L322 owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
Ride height sensor replacement (2003–2005)The air suspension won't change height or adjusts erratically, often with no stored fault codes. The sensor pivots seize, and cracked rear sensor bodies let water in, which corrupts the readings.2 / 5VariesParts plus labor
BMW M62 timing chain guides (2003–2005 4.4)Clatter on a cold start, more chain noise as the engine ages, or in the worst case an oil-pressure light. Nylon guide debris can block the oil pickup.5 / 5≈ 2 days (owner estimate, engine in car)About £600 in parts (owner figure). Atlantic British's complete kit TCKL322 lists at $1,849.95
Cold-start rattle: VANOS seals and non-return valvesA brief rattle on a cold start that goes away on a quick restart, on a BMW 4.4 whose guides may still be fine.3 / 5VariesValves cost a few pounds each. A VANOS seal kit and tool run about £120
Transfer case range-change faultsA chime and a warning message, then the transfer case drops into neutral. Low range engages but high won't, or a 'trans failsafe' message appears.3 / 5VariesAbout £1,000 if the motor has to be replaced
Differential and transfer case oil change (2003–2005)An overdue service. Old oil breaks down and collects condensation, and water in the diffs or transfer case destroys bearings.1 / 5VariesAbout $220 for a kit with oil and new drain/fill plugs
ZF six-speed transmission service (2006–2012)Slow or harsh shifts, fluid weeping from the valve-body connector sleeve, or a high-mileage 'sealed for life' gearbox that has never been serviced.2 / 5≈ 1 hour (owner estimate; one dealer quoted 7 hours)About $280 for the kit
5.0 V8 timing chains (2010–2012)A rattle on cold starts from worn tensioner-to-guide contact. Ignore it and the chain can jump timing or snap.5 / 5VariesGenuine kit TCK5030 lists at $1,499.95. The special tool kit lists at $1,249.95

Years with known problems

YEARSFLAGWHAT TO KNOW
2003–05BewareBMW-engined trucks. The nylon timing-chain guides go brittle, so buy only with receipts or plan to replace them. The 2003–05 front-diff coupling recall also applies.
2010BewareFacelift: 5.0 V8 (375 PS) and 5.0 supercharged (510 PS), LED-accented headlights and a 12-in TFT instrument panel. The 5.0's timing-chain tensioners wear; buy a 2010–12 only with proof of updated parts

Owner questions about Range Rover L322 reliability

Which years and engines should I buy or avoid?

Owners and buyers' guides generally rate the 2007–2009 Jaguar-engined trucks best: Terrain Response, a locking centre diff and the six-speed ZF. Buy a 2003–2005 BMW 4.4 only with receipts for timing guides (or if you'll do them yourself). Buy a 2010–2012 5.0 only with evidence that the chain tensioners and guides have been updated.

Is the air suspension a deal-breaker?

No, but budget for it. Springs leak, compressors fail slowly and noisily, and 2003–05 height sensors seize. Genuine parts are expensive (a full air-ride restoration kit for 2003–05 trucks lists at about $2,450), but each part can be replaced on its own. Some long-term owners convert to coils after spring failures.
