Symptoms
A chime and a warning message, then the transfer case drops into neutral. Low range engages but high won't, or a 'trans failsafe' message appears.
The fix, step by step
- Rarely used range-change motors seize, and their contacts wear.
- Check that the connections under the transfer case are clean and plugged in.
- Try the reset owners use: fit a spare 5A fuse in position 37 of the main fuse box, cycle the ignition, remove the fuse, then cycle the hi/lo selector.
- One owner fixed worn contacts by taking off the contact cover under the case and adjusting them.
- Replace the motor if it has seized.
