Symptoms
Clatter on a cold start, more chain noise as the engine ages, or in the worst case an oil-pressure light. Nylon guide debris can block the oil pickup.
The fix, step by step
- With the engine in the car, remove the front of the engine, the valve covers and the sump.
- Replace the upper and lower chains, the centre and outer guide rails, the tensioners and the tensioner arm, and fit new timing-cover, valve-cover and VANOS seals.
- Owners say getting the crankshaft nut off is the hardest part (one used a homemade locking bar and a scaffold-pole extension).
- Drop the sump to check for guide fragments while you're in there.
