About BoxyTrucks

For the love of right angles

An independent guide to the square-shouldered 4x4s people actually take off-road: 107 generations across 21 families, from the FJ25 to the Grenadier.

BoxyTrucks started with a simple frustration: the best knowledge about these trucks is scattered across twenty-year-old forum threads, specialist shops’ blogs, factory brochures and owners’ heads. We pull it together, one generation at a time, and show our sources.

What you’ll find here

Every generation gets a full guide: where it came from and how it’s built, the best years to buy and the ones to avoid, a pre-purchase checklist, the 804 repairs owners actually end up doing, a printable specs and fluids sheet, wheel and tire fitment, recalls, values, and the suppliers, builders, forums and channels worth knowing. Around them sit tools: the tire fitment tool, head-to-head comparisons and best years to buy for every family.

How we research

Everything is sourced. Each guide lists its sources at the bottom: factory press releases and brochures, owner’s and service manuals cited by name, NHTSA recall records, specialist shops, parts suppliers and long-running owner forums. Where owners and the factory disagree, we say so.

“Best years” means buyer consensus, not spec sheets. A year earns the Sweet spot tag because owners and specialists recommend it, and the Beware tag because of documented problems. Years whose only issue is a recall are tagged Recall, so you know to check it was done rather than to walk away.

We flag what we haven’t verified. Fluid specs, capacities and intervals marked confirm in manual come from owners or suppliers and haven’t been checked against a factory source. Confirm them against the manual for your VIN before you rely on them; see the disclaimer.

Off-road photos only, always credited. We use photography of trucks doing what they were built for, licensed from Unsplash, Pexels, Wikimedia Commons and similar sources, with the photographer credited on every page. We never use photos of wrecks or breakdowns.

How we make money

Some parts and product links are affiliate links: if you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend: we link the suppliers owners trust, whether or not they pay us. Full details are in the affiliate disclosure. There are no display ads, and we don’t sell your data (privacy policy).

Independent

BoxyTrucks isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Jeep, Ford, INEOS or any other manufacturer. Trademarks belong to their owners.
