Range Rover L322 years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Land Rover Range Rover L322 model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
Owners and buyers' guides generally rate the 2007–2009 Jaguar-engined trucks best: Terrain Response, a locking centre diff and the six-speed ZF. Buy a 2003–2005 BMW 4.4 only with receipts for timing guides (or if you'll do them yourself). Buy a 2010–2012 5.0 only with evidence that the chain tensioners and guides have been updated.

Range Rover L322 year by year
| YEAR | VERDICT | WHAT CHANGED |
|---|---|---|
| 2002 | — | Launched in early 2002 as a 2003 model in North America. First monocoque Range Rover, with four-corner independent air suspension, BMW M62 4.4 V8 (and M57 Td6 diesel elsewhere), and a ZF five-speed auto. |
| 2003–05 | Beware | BMW-engined trucks. The nylon timing-chain guides go brittle, so buy only with receipts or plan to replace them. The 2003–05 front-diff coupling recall also applies. |
| 2006 | — | Facelift. Jaguar AJ-V8 4.4 (305 PS) and 4.2 supercharged (400 PS) replace the BMW V8, with ZF six-speed autos and a new touchscreen infotainment system. |
| 2007 | Sweet spot | Terrain Response, a locking centre diff, an electronic rear diff (standard on Supercharged), Brembo brakes and an electronic handbrake; TDV8 replaces the Td6 outside the US, and the switchblade key arrives mid-year. Guides and owners rate 2007–09 Jaguar-engined trucks the most dependable L322s |
| 2010 | Beware | Facelift: 5.0 V8 (375 PS) and 5.0 supercharged (510 PS), LED-accented headlights and a 12-in TFT instrument panel. The 5.0's timing-chain tensioners wear; buy a 2010–12 only with proof of updated parts |
| 2011 | — | 4.4 TDV8 with ZF 8HP70 eight-speed (non-US); reclining rear seats. |
| 2012 | — | Final year. The L405 is unveiled at the Paris show. |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
What a Range Rover L322 costs (October 2026)
This is where cheap Range Rovers live. Most sell for less than a set of air struts and a timing job together, and only very low-mile, well-documented trucks earn more.
| Project / higher mileage | $7.5k–12.5k |
|---|---|
| Driver | $13k–20k |
| Excellent / low-mile | $22k–26k |
Based on 22 Bring a Trailer sales from late August to October 2026 ($7,500–$45,000, median about $14,600). Sub-50k-mile trucks dominate the top band; one exceptional 2011 HSE at $45,000 was an outlier.
