Land Cruiser Prado 120 problems to check before you buy
- 1KD-FTV: injector seats and oil pickupAsk for injector-seat (washer) receipts. Listen for a rattle and look for white smoke on a cold start, then shine a light through the sump drain-plug hole. CarsGuide and Unsealed 4X4 both say carbon on the pickup screen means a suspect engine. Trucks built from August 2007 got aluminum seats.
- 1KD-FTV: injector ageAustralianCar.Reviews says the injectors typically fail at 120,000–140,000 km. Signs are a loud knock when cold, rough idle, poor running under load and worse fuel economy. Both it and 4X4 Australia suggest testing them at every service and replacing them at about 100,000 km, so ask whether they've been done.
- Timing belt or chain? The 1GR-FE V6 and the 2.7 fours use chains. The 1KD-FTV, 1KZ-TE and 5VZ-FE use belts, and HD Automotive quotes Toyota's 1KD interval as 150,000 km or five years. No receipt means budget for the belt and water pump.
- Cracked dash and split rear doorCarsGuide reports dashboards cracking near the passenger airbag on early 120s, and rear-door skins splitting along the hinge side under the weight of the spare. Check both, and look closely at the door if a heavier spare tire has been fitted.
- Rear air suspension (Grande and top grades)If it has air springs, check that it levels and holds height overnight. 4X4 Australia warns that self-leveling rear air makes aftermarket suspension 'a much bigger (and more expensive) task' than on coil-sprung trucks.
- V6 transmission4X4 Australia suggests skipping the early four-speed automatic V6 in favor of the five-speed auto (late 2005 on) or the rarer six-speed manual.
- Test the center diff lockEngage the center lock off pavement and make sure the light comes on and goes off. IH8MUD's GX 470 pre-buy advice applies to the Prado's shared system: a seized actuator is an expensive surprise on a truck that's never left the road.
- Import eligibilityA J120 can't be imported into the US until it's 25 years old by date of manufacture. The first ones qualify from September 2027. A '2003 Prado' advertised as US-legal today should set off alarms.
The repairs Land Cruiser Prado 120 owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1KD-FTV injector seats (washers) and oil-pickup check | White smoke and a rattle after a cold start, oily carbon in the rocker cover, and in the worst case low oil pressure from a blocked pickup. | 4 / 5 | Workshop-dependent; often done alongside an injector service | HD Automotive lists a genuine 1KD injector fitting kit at AUD $169; dropping and cleaning the sump adds labor |
| Replace worn 1KD-FTV injectors | A loud knock when cold, poor fuel economy, rough or erratic idle, and rough running under load. AustralianCar.Reviews puts typical failure at 120,000–140,000 km, but has seen them go at 75,000. | 4 / 5 | A diesel-specialist job for most owners | HD Automotive lists genuine Denso 1KD injectors for the Prado at AUD $2,200, or AUD $2,790 as a kit with lines |
| 1KD-FTV timing belt and water pump | None until it fails, and HD Automotive notes the 1KD is an interference engine, so a broken belt means serious internal damage. Interval: 150,000 km or five years per HD Automotive; Roughtrax's UK sheet gives 100,000 miles or 120 months. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 1.5–2 hours of workshop time with the water pump (HD Automotive) | HD Automotive's genuine 1KD belt kit lists at AUD $446 |
| Clean a carboned-up 1KD intake and EGR, then fit a catch can | Reduced performance and a choked, flat feel on a high-kilometer common-rail diesel. | 3 / 5 | Unsealed 4X4 calls the cleaning 'extremely laborious' | HD Automotive's 1KD intake-clean gasket kit lists at AUD $230 |
| Front lower ball joints | Torn boots weeping grease, clunks over bumps, vague steering. | 3 / 5 | ≈ Half a day for both sides | Parts plus alignment |
| Replace a front wheel bearing hub | A growl or vibration from one front corner that changes with speed or load. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 2 hours per side | A complete hub assembly bolts in, so no press is needed |
| Rear air springs: repair or convert to coils | The rear sags overnight or sits on the bump stops, the compressor runs constantly, and the height-control light blinks. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 2 hours for a simple coil swap | Usually cheaper to convert than to buy new air parts, according to GX 470 owners |
| Front CV axle or boots | Grease flung around the inside of the wheel, split boots, clicking on tight turns. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 2–3 hours per side | Parts plus labor |
Each repair links to a step-by-step guide with tools, part numbers and where to buy the parts.
Years with known problems
| YEARS | FLAG | WHAT TO KNOW |
|---|---|---|
| April 2003 | Recall | Australian recall PRA 2003/6123 for the fuel pulsation damper on early GRJ120s |
| Late 2006 | Beware | Euro IV 1KD-FTV (127 kW, 410 Nm) with 5AT and 6MT; Australia's diesel switches from the 1KZ-TE. Until August 2007 the 1KD has copper injector seats, which can fail and let blow-by gases carbon up the oil pick-up, so ask whether they have been replaced |

- Fuel pulsation damper assembly (Australia) ↗ GRJ120 built 29 October 2002 – 22 March 2003 · PRA 2003/6123April 2003: the pulsation damper, which smooths fuel-pressure pulses from the injectors, may have been assembled incorrectly.
- 1KD-FTV injector seats changed from copper to aluminum ↗ Production change from August 2007 to stop blow-by leaking past the injector seats (AustralianCar.Reviews).

Owner questions about Land Cruiser Prado 120 reliability
What's the 1KD-FTV injector problem?
The original injector seats were copper and leak with age. Blow-by then mixes with the oil, forms carbon and can block the sump pickup, starving the engine. Aluminum seats replaced copper from August 2007. Separately, injectors often fail at 120,000–140,000 km. Check the seat history, look for white smoke or a rattle on a cold start, and inspect the pickup through the drain-plug hole.
