Rear air springs: repair or convert to coils

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours for a simple coil swapCOST Usually cheaper to convert than to buy new air parts, according to GX 470 owners

Symptoms

The rear sags overnight or sits on the bump stops, the compressor runs constantly, and the height-control light blinks.

The fix, step by step

  1. Confirm the leak with soapy water where each bag folds over its perch.
  2. To stay on air, replace both springs, plus the compressor if it has worn out chasing leaks.
  3. To convert, support the axle, remove the shocks, cut the air lines, pop the upper clip on each bag and fit a coil-conversion kit with springs, retainers and isolators.
  4. Most kits are sold for the GX 470's identical rear layout, so confirm Prado fitment with the vendor.
  5. Recheck bolt torque after 100 miles.
