Clean a carboned-up 1KD intake and EGR, then fit a catch can

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME Unsealed 4X4 calls the cleaning 'extremely laborious'COST HD Automotive's 1KD intake-clean gasket kit lists at AUD $230

Symptoms

Reduced performance and a choked, flat feel on a high-kilometer common-rail diesel.

The fix, step by step

  1. Oily exhaust gas fed back through the EGR coats the intake in carbon on any common-rail diesel with EGR, the 1KD included.
  2. Remove the intake plumbing and EGR parts, scrape and clean them (or use a chemical clean), and refit with new gaskets.
  3. Then fit an oil separator (catch can) so oil mist is trapped before it gets back into the intake.
  4. Unsealed points out that blanking the EGR is illegal for road use.
