Replace a front wheel bearing hub

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours per sideCOST A complete hub assembly bolts in, so no press is needed

Symptoms

A growl or vibration from one front corner that changes with speed or load.

The fix, step by step

  1. This is the same hub as the GX 470, FJ Cruiser and 4Runner.
  2. Pull the dust cap and break the axle nut with a 35 mm socket.
  3. Remove the caliper and rotor, then the four 17 mm bolts holding the hub to the knuckle.
  4. Once they're cracked loose, switch to an open-end wrench, because the bolts can't come fully out with the hub in place.
  5. Knock the hub free, keep or replace the O-ring behind it, and bolt in the new assembly with a new axle nut.
