Front CV axle or boots

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2–3 hours per sideCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Grease flung around the inside of the wheel, split boots, clicking on tight turns.

The fix, step by step

  1. Loosen the axle nut with the wheel on the ground, then lift the truck.
  2. Separate the lower ball joint or tie rod so the knuckle can swing, pull the axle out of the hub and pop the inner joint out of the differential.
  3. Fit the new axle (or rebooted original), torque the axle nut, then stake or pin it.
  4. Expedition Portal's GX 470 project used factory Toyota axles.
