Symptoms
White smoke and a rattle after a cold start, oily carbon in the rocker cover, and in the worst case low oil pressure from a blocked pickup.
The fix, step by step
- Unsealed 4X4's advice: if the seats are leaking, have them replaced, and have the mechanic check the oil pickup for contamination.
- Pull the injectors, clean the bores and fit new seats and O-rings from a genuine fitting kit.
- Then shine a light through the drain-plug hole at the pickup screen.
- If there's anything on it but oil, drop the sump and clean the pickup before the engine starves.
- Unsealed suggests replacing the seals every 40,000 km.
- Stop the engine at once if the oil-pressure light comes on.
