Symptoms
None until it fails, and HD Automotive notes the 1KD is an interference engine, so a broken belt means serious internal damage. Interval: 150,000 km or five years per HD Automotive; Roughtrax's UK sheet gives 100,000 miles or 120 months.
The fix, step by step
- Remove the fan and shroud, drive belt and crank pulley, then the timing covers.
- Set the timing marks and replace the belt, hydraulic tensioner, idler pulley and front cam and crank seals (all in the genuine kit).
- Unsealed 4X4 says to replace the water pump with the belt, or before 150,000 km anyway, and to check the drive-belt idler bearings while you're there.
- Turn the engine over by hand to confirm the marks before you start it.
