Lexus GX 470 problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Lexus GX 470, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Lexus GX 470 problems to check before you buy

  1. Frame rustForum veterans call this the biggest concern on trucks from the salt belt. Get underneath with a light and a screwdriver, or ask for close-up photos of the frame. Rust on the rear air-spring perches is also what kills the airbags.
  2. Rear air suspensionLook for a rear end that sags overnight, a blinking height-control light, a harsh ride or a compressor that runs constantly. Spray soapy water where each airbag folds over its lower perch. If the system is already converted to coils, ask whose kit was used.
  3. Timing belt historyThe 2UZ-FE uses a belt that Toyota schedules at 90,000 miles, and the water pump runs off it. If there's no receipt, budget roughly $1K at a shop or a weekend of your own time. Engine Builder classes all belt-driven Toyota V8s as interference engines, so don't gamble on an unknown belt.
  4. Cold-start tickA tick that fades as the engine warms is the classic sign of a cracked exhaust manifold, often on the driver's side. The repair is a big one, so treat it as a price negotiation point.
  5. Steering rackLook for wet rack boots and power-steering fluid on the crossmember, and listen for creaking or whining at full lock. One ClubLexus owner's rack began creaking and whining loudly at about 130k miles.
  6. Front end wearCheck for torn lower ball-joint boots and grease slung from the CV boots, and listen for clunks over bumps. Many trucks need lower control arms or ball joints, CV axles and front bearings at this age.
  7. KDSS or not?Turn the key and watch for a momentary KDSS light, or look for the oversized front sway bar. KDSS improves stability and articulation, but some skids and sliders need KDSS-specific versions or modifications.
  8. DashboardHeat cracks and sticky dashboard surfaces are common enough that Lexus ran a warranty enhancement program for 2003–2008 GX 470s. Check whether the dash was already replaced, and confirm with a dealer whether any coverage still applies.

The repairs Lexus GX 470 owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
Rear air spring replacement or coil conversionThe rear sits low or sags overnight, the ride turns harsh, the height-control light blinks, the compressor runs nonstop, and in the worst case the truck is sitting on its bump stops.2 / 5≈ 2 hours (simple coil swap) to half a day (with new trailing arms)Under $200 in parts for a basic coil swap (owner report)
Timing belt and water pumpNo symptoms until it fails, which is the problem. Due every 90,000 miles. The water pump is belt-driven, so a weeping pump or coolant crust behind the timing covers is a good reason to do both now.4 / 5≈ a full weekend for a first-timerAbout $950–$1,770 at shops, as quoted by owners on ClubLexus (the higher figure included a radiator and plugs)
Exhaust manifold replacement (often the driver's side)A ticking noise from the engine bay that is loudest cold and often fades as the manifold heats and expands. The cause is a paper-thin crack where the flange meets the first pipe.4 / 5Same-day job at a specialist shopParts plus labor (high: engine mounts have to come out)
Steering rack replacementWet rack boots, a falling power-steering reservoir, and creaking or whining on every turn of the wheel.3 / 5≈ half a day plus an alignment$1,900 at an independent shop including tie-rod ends and high-pressure hoses (owner report). Parts run from about $300 for an aftermarket rack to about $1,000 for new OEM.
Front lower ball joints and control armsTorn ball-joint boots weeping grease, clunks over bumps, and vague steering. Worn lower control arm bushings add knocks of their own.3 / 5≈ half a day for both sidesAbout $270 per OEM lower control arm (owner report, 4Runner V8 part). The OEM ball joint is only sold with the arm.
Front CV axle replacementGrease slung around the inside of the wheel, split CV boots, and clicking on tight turns.3 / 5≈ 2–3 hours per sideParts plus labor
Front differential support upgrade (2003–early 2005)Usually nothing until it breaks. GXOR warns that the original passenger-side front differential support can fail catastrophically, which can take out nearby parts, the oil pan included, and the engine with it.3 / 5≈ 2–3 hours (estimate)Parts plus labor
Secondary air injection pump (2005–2009)A 'vacuum cleaner' whine for about 30 seconds after a cold start that gets rougher as the pump fails. Owners report codes including P2440, P2442, P2445 and P2432, and one reported random limp mode. GXOR says a failed system usually affects only cold-start emissions, not driveability.4 / 5A long day. The intake manifold has to come off (GXOR).A mechanic quoted one ClubLexus owner about $2,000
