Steering rack replacement

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ half a day plus an alignmentCOST $1,900 at an independent shop including tie-rod ends and high-pressure hoses (owner report). Parts run from about $300 for an aftermarket rack to about $1,000 for new OEM.

Symptoms

Wet rack boots, a falling power-steering reservoir, and creaking or whining on every turn of the wheel.

The fix, step by step

  1. First confirm the source: clean the engine bay and recheck, because hoses and the pump can drip onto the rack.
  2. Then disconnect the tie-rod ends and pressure lines, unbolt the rack and swap in an OEM reman unit with new bushings.
  3. While it's out, remove and clean the reservoir and its mesh screen, and consider an inline filter.
  4. Bleed the system, then get an alignment.
