Exhaust manifold replacement (often the driver's side)

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME Same-day job at a specialist shopCOST Parts plus labor (high: engine mounts have to come out)

Symptoms

A ticking noise from the engine bay that is loudest cold and often fades as the manifold heats and expands. The cause is a paper-thin crack where the flange meets the first pipe.

The fix, step by step

  1. Soak every fastener in penetrating oil for days beforehand.
  2. The engine mounts must be released, and the engine raised, to reach the lower manifold studs.
  3. Replace the manifold assembly with new gaskets, studs and nuts.
  4. Expect seized or broken studs on rusty trucks.
  5. Afterward, idle the engine for about half an hour to burn off manufacturing oil.
