Front lower ball joints and control arms

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ half a day for both sidesCOST About $270 per OEM lower control arm (owner report, 4Runner V8 part). The OEM ball joint is only sold with the arm.

Symptoms

Torn ball-joint boots weeping grease, clunks over bumps, and vague steering. Worn lower control arm bushings add knocks of their own.

The fix, step by step

  1. Either replace the whole lower control arm with its new ball joint and bushings, or press out the old joint and press in an aftermarket one (owners cite MOOG K500017 and Sankei 555).
  2. Make sure the grease fitting faces an accessible direction, and grease the new joint if it shipped dry.
  3. Buy KDSS or non-KDSS parts to match your truck, then align it.
