Symptoms
Grease slung around the inside of the wheel, split CV boots, and clicking on tight turns.
The fix, step by step
- Loosen the axle nut with the wheel on the ground, then lift the truck.
- Separate the lower ball joint or tie rod enough to swing the knuckle, pull the axle out of the hub and pop the inner joint from the differential.
- Install a new axle; Expedition Portal's project truck used factory Toyota parts.
- Torque the axle nut, then stake or pin it.
