Lexus GX 470 years to avoid, and the best years to buy
Every Lexus GX 470 model year: which ones owners and specialists recommend, which have documented problems, which carry recalls, and what they sell for now.
There's no consensus year. Every GX 470 has the same 2UZ-FE V8 and A750F five-speed automatic; 2005 added VVT-i (270 hp, restated as 263 hp from 2006). Some Expedition Portal members hold out for a VVT-i truck, but the thread's own starter calls it a mixed bag, one ClubLexus owner who drove both says you can't tell the difference to 60 mph, and that thread's starter reckons quality is much the same across the model years. Trucks from mid-2004 get the 6,500 lb hitch and 2008–2009 the facelift. In practice, rust, timing-belt records, air suspension, steering rack and manifold matter more than the build date.

| 2004 | — | Sealed transmission (no dipstick), TPMS, roll-sensing curtain airbags and an optional backup camera. A mid-year hitch upgrade raised towing to 6,500 lb, and KDSS became optional late in the year. |
| 2005 | — | VVT-i lifts output to 270 hp with ULEV II certification. Bluetooth and a new Sport model with KDSS standard. |
| 2006 | — | Same engine, restated at 263 hp under revised SAE testing. Lexus Link telematics offered. |
| 2007 | — | New-generation navigation, auxiliary input jack and a larger optional rear-seat screen. |
| 2008 | — | Facelift: dark metallic grille, liquid-graphite wheels, more chrome and revised turn signals. |
| 2009 | — | Final year. Only 6,235 GXs were sold in calendar 2009 before the GX 460 took over. |
“Sweet spot” means owners and specialists recommend those years; “Beware” means documented problems; “Recall” means check the recall was done rather than walk away.
