Grenadier Quartermaster problems: 8 things to check
The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.
Grenadier Quartermaster problems to check before you buy
- Run the VIN at NHTSARecalls 23V828 (auxiliary switch relay wiring), 23V903 (steering ball-joint nuts) and 25V147 (door buttons) are filed against 2023–2024 Grenadiers. As of October 2026, NHTSA's recall database lists none for 2025–2026 models. Check every truck by VIN anyway, and get proof that any open campaign was closed.
- Do the payload math before you buy a camperPayload is modest for a pickup: about 1,675 lb at US launch, and 832–907 kg in Australia depending on engine. A canopy, fridge, water, a second battery and a winch use that up quickly. Expedition Portal says even its Trialmaster test truck (winch, dual batteries, bed rack) is rated at about 1,400 lb. In Australia, Caravan World quotes a GVM upgrade to roughly 3,900–4,000 kg for about A$5,800 plus fitting.
- Know where the spare will liveFrom the factory the spare stands in the bed, sticks up above the bed sides and has to come out before a pallet will fit. It also gets in the way of flat tonneau covers. Ask whether the spare has been relocated (owners have moved it under the deck or under the rear axle) and check that the new mount is solid.
- Drive it empty and on the highwaySeveral INEOS Forum owners describe an unladen Quartermaster as 'jittery' over bumps in a way the wagon isn't, though it settles once a canopy and gear go in. Pre-2026 trucks also have the slow, non-self-centring steering box and a 14.5 m turning circle. MY2026 trucks get the variable-ratio box and a turning circle about 5% tighter.
- Wellside or cab-chassis?Outside the US you can buy a cab-chassis and fit a tray. Ineos and Norweld offered early Australian cab-chassis buyers a A$7,000 tray contribution, with conditions. Caravan World lists Norweld trays from A$18,990 and canopies from A$19,205, so a tray build costs a lot more than the tub truck, but it gives you a flat, wider deck.
- Confirm the lockers and Trialmaster kitThe centre diff lock is standard on every truck. Front and rear lockers come on the Trialmaster or with the Rough Pack. The locker switches are in the overhead panel, and the centre lock is on the transfer lever. Trialmaster trucks also get a raised air intake and all-terrain tires.
- Check the bed for tie-down track and holesSome dealers fit L-track to the bed and sides. One forum owner noted that some trucks were built without bed rails, so adding them means drilling and countersinking. Look for neat, sealed holes and no rust starting around the fasteners.
- Ask about parts and the dealerCaravan World scored accessibility of spare parts 7/10. The engine and gearbox come from BMW and ZF, but body, bed and chassis parts come through Ineos's small network. Ask the nearest dealer about lead times, especially if you travel remote.
The repairs Grenadier Quartermaster owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter change (B58) | Service due, an 'Engine Oil Low' message, or the first break-in change. Towing and camper weight are good reasons to shorten intervals. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour | About $150 for a dealer oil service, as quoted by a US Grenadier owner |
| Engine air filter | Service interval, or after dusty trail use. With a camper or tray, you'll be on gravel roads more than you think. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 15 minutes | Filter only |
| Cabin air filter | Weak airflow or a musty smell, especially after dusty trips. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 5–10 minutes once you know the trick | About $18 aftermarket |
| Rear sag under a canopy or camper | The rear sits low with a cap, fridge, water and batteries on board. The front bump stops get hit, and the truck tows nose-high. | 3 / 5 | Not documented; varies by kit | $599 for Owl/Eibach Pro-Lift springs (set of 4) or $765–795 for a Dirtbox air-bag kit, plus labor |
| Unladen 'jitter': shock upgrade | The ride feels busy and jittery over small bumps when the bed is empty. Forum owners say the wagon doesn't do this. | 3 / 5 | Not documented | Parts plus labor |
| Relocate the spare out of the bed | The spare blocks the pallet space, a flat tonneau or a canopy floor. | 3 / 5 | Depends on the mount | Parts plus labor |
| Add L-track or O-track to the bed | The four lashing eyes aren't enough for bikes, boxes or a drawer system. | 2 / 5 | Varies | Track and fasteners |
| Diesel harshness at 1,700–2,000 rpm (non-US) | Vibration or harshness at a steady 1,700–2,000 rpm on B57 diesel trucks. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 15 minutes | Free |
