Symptoms
No upshift, or a lazy one, from first when cold. The usual cause is dirt in the governor at the back of the box, which sits ahead of the filter.
The fix, step by step
- Change the fluid and filter regularly and set the level correctly.
- The TD manual quoted on the forum gives 7.0 liters including the filter.
- Check the breather at the top rear of the box, because if it's disconnected dirt and water get in.
- Don't leave the engine running in Park for long.
- The 4HP22 was also used by Range Rover and BMW, and one owner found the clutch packs share part numbers with Rover, though first and second gear ratios differ.
