Symptoms
Temperature needle climbing toward the red on a long run, burst hoses, oil in the expansion tank.
The fix, step by step
- Early TDs were known to run hot, which is why the cooling system was revised four times.
- With oil in the coolant, check the oil cooler first and then the head gasket, and check whether the truck has the coolant after-run pump.
- Replace hoses and the thermostat as a set, bleed the system carefully, and let the engine idle to cool before shutting it off after a hard drive.
