Symptoms
Oil under the truck, topping up every day on a road trip (one owner added 3–4 quarts every 400–500 miles), oil on the valve cover.
The fix, step by step
- Degrease the underside and the engine, take a baseline photo and drive.
- Then work through the usual suspects.
- One owner replaced his valve-cover gasket three times before finding the leak was the rear camshaft seal.
- Early TDs also have an oil cooler between the filter and the block that is known to leak.
- A valve-cover gasket from a 1986 Volvo 740 turbo-diesel fitted one US 718.
