Axle tube and swivel boot leaks

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME A day or moreCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Oil in the yellow swivel boots, oil pouring out when you open a wheel drive filler, high oil levels downstream of a low diff.

The fix, step by step

  1. First rule out an overfill.
  2. Each unit has two plugs, and the filler is the lower one: fill until oil comes out of it.
  3. Then check the breather on the central tube.
  4. Owners report that the axle-tube O-rings are a weak spot on diesels: early P90s and P80s use the same O-ring as the 710/712, while later P90s and P93s use a plastic ring and sealant instead.
