Portal (wheel drive) seals and outer bearings

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day per hubCOST About $75 in bearing and seal from a bearing house, versus about $230 one owner was quoted

Symptoms

Oil weeping from a portal, on the inside of the wheel or onto the brakes. One owner noticed a leaky rear portal about 2,000 miles after buying his 718.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drain the portal, pull the hub, and replace the outer bearing and seal.
  2. The parts are standard sizes: owners list the outer wheel bearing as 9006245 (50.8 × 101.6 × 20.6 mm, sold as RLS16) and the seal as 7161340461 (70 × 90 × 10 mm).
  3. Clean out the old oil and refill with the correct wheel-drive oil.
