Timing belt and water pump (D24T)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME —COST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Usually none until it fails. The D24T's camshaft is belt-driven, so a truck without belt receipts should be treated as due. Refurbished trucks sold recently list a new cam belt and water pump among the first jobs.

The fix, step by step

  1. Take off the engine cover to reach the front of the engine.
  2. Replace the timing belt with its tensioner and pulley, then the water pump and seal while the front of the engine is open.
  3. Follow the VW/Volvo D24 procedure and the belt interval in your manual.
  4. Owners source most engine service parts as Volvo 740 turbo-diesel or VW LT items.
