Ineos Grenadier problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Ineos Grenadier problems to check before you buy

  1. Run the VIN for all three US recalls23V828 (auxiliary switch relay wire trapped under a fastener, fire risk), 23V903 (non-locking nuts on the steering rod ball joint) and 25V147 (door button assemblies short on grease; 7,022 trucks built July 6, 2023 to April 19, 2024). All are free dealer fixes. Ask for proof they were done.
  2. Ask about software and module historyForum owners report fuel 'implausibility' warnings that took more than one reflash, false steering warnings, failed modules and unexplained messages. A truck with documented updates and a quiet dash is worth more than one with a thin service file.
  3. Drive it on a real roadPre-2026 trucks use the slow Bosch recirculating-ball box that reviewers called vague and wandering. Some owners love it, some fit aftermarket stabilizers or pump kits. MY2026 got a new variable-ratio steering gear. Know which one you're buying.
  4. Check for water in the doors and cabinOwners have reported rear doors holding water after a wash, condensation, door seals coming off and a kickplate whose adhesive let go. Look at door bottoms, carpets and seals.
  5. Check the oil level and the break-in serviceOne owner got a low-oil message at 12,000 miles. Many owners did an early break-in oil change (500–1,000 miles was the dealer advice quoted on the forum). Ask whether it was done and check the dipstick reading in the menu.
  6. Confirm the Rough Pack if you want lockersThe centre diff lock is standard, but front and rear lockers come with the Rough Pack ($2,850 on base and Fieldmaster at launch; standard on Trialmaster). Look for the locker switches in the overhead panel.
  7. Inspect any lift and big-tire installAgile Offroad warns that lift height changes can damage the factory driveshaft. On trucks with 285/75s or bigger, check that the spare clears the small rear door, and look for tire rub caused by a body sitting off-center on the frame.
  8. Understand the parts and dealer networkIneos is a young brand with a small dealer network, and the factory stopped from September 2024 to January 2025 over a parts shortage. Powertrain parts are BMW and ZF, but body and chassis parts come through Ineos. Ask the local dealer about parts lead times.

The repairs Ineos Grenadier owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
Engine oil and filter change (B58)Service due, or an 'Engine Oil Low' message. Many owners do an early break-in change, then shorter intervals than the factory schedule.2 / 5≈ 1 hourAbout $150 dealer oil service quoted by a US owner; a US first service including transfer case and diff fluids was quoted at about $1,700
Engine air filterService interval, or after dusty trail use. One owner changes it every second oil change (about 5,000 miles).1 / 5≈ 15 minutesFilter only
Cabin air filterWeak airflow or musty smell. Note: one owner found almost no cabin heat in 15°F weather with the filter removed.1 / 5≈ 5–10 minutes once you know the trickAbout $18 for an aftermarket filter
Spare carrier clearance after upsizing tiresWith 285/75R17 or 255/85R17 tires, the spare hits or barely clears the small rear door.2 / 5≈ 1 hourWashers, or $239 for a relocation bracket
Tire rub on one side only: re-center the body on the frameBigger tires rub on one side but clear on the other, with the same wheels and offset on both sides.3 / 5Shop job; time not documentedParts plus labor
Door doesn't latch / door button sticks (recall 25V147)Exterior door button stays pressed in, door doesn't fully latch, or the head unit shows a door-open warning that turns red with chimes once you're moving.1 / 5Dealer visitFree under recall

Owner questions about Ineos Grenadier reliability

Which years should I buy or avoid?

There's no bad engine to avoid, since every US truck has the B58. The early US trucks (MY2024) carry all three recalls, so get proof they're closed. MY2026 brings the revised steering, HVAC and driver-assist tweaks plus more than 40 smaller changes. If you plan to drive a lot of highway miles, 2026 is the one to buy. Cars.com calls the 2026 steering 'a tremendous improvement'; Parkers is cooler and calls it 'marginally better on-road'.

Is it reliable?

It's too new for a long-term verdict. The BMW six and ZF eight-speed are widely used and well proven elsewhere. Owner reports focus on electronics: modules, false warnings, software reflashes, sticky door buttons and water ingress, plus three US recalls. Most owners on the forums still sound happy, but a good dealer matters more than usual.
