Engine swap · Mercedes-Benz OM617 (3.0 L I5, mechanical injection, NA or turbo) and OM606 (3.0 L 24-valve I6, NA or turbo-intercooled)

Mercedes OM606 and OM617 diesel swaps in boxy 4x4s

The OM617 five-cylinder is the diesel that took Mercedes saloons to absurd mileages, and the OM606 straight-six is the one tuners turn up until something gives. Both are cheap to find in scrapped W123s and W210s, the OM617's mechanical Bosch inline pump needs almost no electronics, and both engines fit boxy 4x4s surprisingly well.

In a G-Wagen the swap is close to coming home: the W463's G 300 Turbodiesel had an OM606 from the factory. In a Land Cruiser or a Jeep it's a full conversion, with adapter plates, a rear-sump oil pan and some head-scratching over bellhousings. Either way, the result is a simple diesel that most US emissions programs won't know what to do with.

Trucks it goes into

Mercedes-Benz G-Class W460The most common OM606 home. DieselPumpUK sells a W460 kit that swaps in a 37DZ six-speed for OM606 or OM617 engines (£2,995 with a used gearbox), as well as a cast-aluminium sump and genuine G mounting arms for fitting an OM606 or OM603 to a W460 or W463, an intercooler kit and an upgraded cooling package. Turbodiesel swaps also turn up often on Bring a Trailer, where OM606-powered 300 GDs sold for $79,500 in January 2026 and $69,696 in June 2026, and OM606 240 GDs for $20,500–55,000 in 2025–26.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class W461Expedition Motor Company builds restored ex-military 250 GD Wolfs with an optional OM605a (225 hp, 300 lb-ft) or OM606a (275 hp, 350 lb-ft) turbodiesel, both manual-only, or an LS3. EMC's builder starts at $230,000 for a short wheelbase and $250,000 for a long wheelbase.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463The W463's 1996–2001 G 300 Turbodiesel used the OM606.964 from the factory, so an OM606 is a natural choice for re-powering a W463 with a tired or weaker diesel. DieselPumpUK lists a heavy-duty W463 intercooler kit for the OM606, and its OM606 sump and mounting arms are listed for both W460 and W463.
Toyota Land Cruiser 80 SeriesIH8MUD member anothernord documented putting an OM606 from a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel into a 1997 FZJ80. He kept the A343F automatic with a custom two-piece adapter (OM606 cranks have eight bolts and the A343F ten). He used an OM648 rear-sump pan and pump, a Holset HE351VE turbo controlled by a DSL1, and a Microsquirt for the gearbox. His finished kit later sold for $6,200. For manuals, DieselPumpUK sells an OM606 to 80 Series diesel five-speed (H151) adapter kit at £1,195.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60Two routes. For the OM617, a 4x4labs adapter mated it to the Toyota H42 and H55F (using the stock Toyota flywheel, starter and clutch), and one Arizona FJ60 build ran it on a 300SD engine. For the OM606, DieselPumpUK's H55F kit (£1,195) is designed for the BJ73's 10-spline input. Forum members point out that it needs the 2H/3B-pattern bellhousing rather than the FJ60's 2F one.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40A complete OM617A turbo FJ40 swap offered on IH8MUD in 2018 used an OM617-to-small-block-Chevy adapter. That let it use Advance Adapters' SBC bellhousing kit for the H42 four-speed, with a SBC clutch, flywheel and mounts. The package (engine, H42, and an R1A transfer case with a 4.7 crawler box) was offered for $3,000 OBO. Going through a Mercedes-to-SBC adapter lets a build reuse off-the-shelf V8 conversion parts.
Jeep CJ-7A jeep-cj.com member put the turbocharged OM617 from a 1985 300D into a 1983 CJ-7 in place of the AMC 258, behind the Jeep's T-4 and Dana 300, using the Jeep flywheel and clutch. He bought a bellhousing adapter and fabricated the mounts and wiring himself. He reported better than 15 mpg and wished he had 3.73 gears instead of 2.73s for 33-inch tyres.
Jeep Wrangler TJDieselPumpUK sells an OM60x adapter kit for the Jeep AX-15 manual (£1,195) and an AW4 automatic kit (£1,095) for Wranglers or Cherokees with the 4.0-litre bellhousing pattern, which covers the TJ and the Cherokee XJ.
Land Rover 90 / 110 / DefenderDieselPumpUK builds out the Defender side as well: OM605/OM606 clutch and adapter kits for the TD5 R380 (£1,095) and the Puma MT82 (£1,095), mounting arms for 200Tdi/300Tdi chassis, a Puma-to-OM606 cooling package, and a 3-inch exhaust for an OM606 Defender 110. An OM617-powered 1988 Land Rover 90 sold on Bring a Trailer for $25,775 in February 2026.

Why people do it

Simplicity, sourcing and headroom. The OM617 (1974–1991) uses Bosch inline injection pumps with flyweight governors and vacuum shutoff, so there's almost nothing electronic to wire. It made 80–88 PS naturally aspirated and up to 125 PS and 250 Nm as the turbocharged OM617A. The OM606 (1993–2001) is a 24-valve DOHC straight-six making 136 PS without a turbo, or 177 PS and 330 Nm with a turbo and intercooler. It weighs 210 kg dry, and tuners routinely go well beyond stock. Expedition Motor Company tunes its OM606a to 275 hp and 350 lb-ft.

And they're cheap to get hold of. In 2021, an IH8MUD member offered a complete OM617 from a 300SD for $1,000 OBO. W123 300Ds, W126 300SDs and W210 E300 Turbodiesels (one OM606 80 Series build used a 1998 car) keep supplying engines.

What it takes

Four things trip people up. First, oil sumps. The OM606 has a front sump, right where a 4x4's front axle sits, so builders fit a rear-sump pan (one 80 Series build used an OM648 pan and pump) or a G-Wagen-specific sump. Second, bellhousings. Toyota gearboxes changed patterns between petrol and diesel engines, so an H55F from a 2F truck may not match a kit made for the BJ73's 2H/3B pattern, and the input splines can differ too. Third, the crank. OM606 cranks use an eight-bolt pattern, which differs from some Toyota automatics.

Fourth, fuel and boost control. One forum member notes that an OM606 may need its injection pump converted to an OM603-type pump for fully mechanical running, and DieselPumpUK sells upgraded OM606/OM603 pumps. Hybrid and variable-geometry turbos need a controller. Then come the usual jobs: cooling (intercooler, radiator, oil cooler stacked up front), a 12-volt starter and alternator, and gearing. The 300D-powered CJ-7's owner found his 2.73s too tall for the diesel.

Parts and kits

The UK's DieselPumpUK is the closest thing to a one-stop shop. It sells CNC adapter kits with flywheel and Sachs clutch from Mercedes OM60x engines to the Toyota H151 and H55F, a Toyota R150F/3VZ pattern, the Jeep AX-15 and AW4, and the Land Rover R380 (TD5) and Puma MT82. It also sells G-Wagen sumps, mounting arms, intercoolers and cooling packages, and upgraded OM606/OM603 injection pumps. Prices are in pounds and the parts ship from the UK.

For OM617 builds, the long-standing trick is an OM617-to-small-block-Chevy adapter, which opens up the V8 conversion catalogue: Advance Adapters' SBC-to-Toyota bellhousings, clutches and mounts. Benz Injection sells injection pumps, turbos, injectors and engines for classic Mercedes diesels. For a turnkey G, Expedition Motor Company builds OM605a and OM606a Wolfs.

Emissions and registration

Federally, EPA's engine-switching policy only accepts a swap if the resulting vehicle matches a certified configuration of the same or newer model year as the chassis. A Mercedes engine in a Toyota, Jeep or Land Rover isn't a certified configuration of that chassis. W460 G-Wagens were never sold new in the US, and grey-market trucks were federalised individually.

In California, BAR's Engine Change Guidelines require the engine to be the same model year or newer than the vehicle, of the same GVWR class and certification type (with manufacturer or CARB proof), fitted with all of the donor's emissions equipment, and inspected by a BAR Referee. BAR also bases the first referee inspection on the donor vehicle's Smog Check requirements. That matters here, because California exempts diesels from 1997 and earlier but tests 1998-and-newer diesels up to 14,000 lb GVWR, so an OM606 from a 1998-or-later car brings 1998-and-newer rules with it. Gasoline vehicles from 1975 and earlier are exempt too, but don't assume a diesel swap keeps a truck exempt. Ask the referee first, and check your own state's rules.

What it costs

Kits: DieselPumpUK listed its Toyota, Jeep and Land Rover adapter kits at £1,095–1,195 in October 2026. Its W460 six-speed conversion with a used 37DZ was £2,995, the G-Wagen OM606 sump £995 and the Defender Puma cooling package £1,650, all before shipping, which it warns is expensive for crated parts. Used donor engines are cheap. An OM617 was offered for about $1,000 in 2021, and a whole OM617A FJ40 swap package for $3,000 OBO in 2018. A complete OM606 kit for an FZJ80 sold for $6,200 in 2021, without intake, exhaust or intercooler.

Finished trucks: on Bring a Trailer, OM606 W460s sold for $20,500–79,500 in 2025–26, against a $25,000–45,000 driver range for W460s in general. An OM617 Land Rover 90 made $25,775. A turnkey EMC Wolf starts at $230,000.

Questions

OM617 or OM606?

The OM617 is the simpler, older five-cylinder: 80–88 PS naturally aspirated or up to 125 PS turbocharged, with a mechanical-style pump. The OM606 is a 24-valve six making 136 PS without a turbo or 177 PS turbo-intercooled, with far more tuning headroom. EMC runs 275 hp in its Wolfs. The 606 needs more work on sumps and injection.

Why do I need a different oil pan?

The OM606 has a front sump, right where a 4x4's front axle sits. Builders fit a rear-sump pan from an OM648 or a purpose-made G-Wagen sump.

Will it bolt to my Toyota H55F?

With the right kit and bellhousing. DieselPumpUK's H55F kit is designed for the BJ73's 10-spline input and the 2H/3B bellhousing pattern, so an FJ60's 2F-pattern H55F needs the matching bellhousing. Older OM617 adapters from 4x4labs fitted the H42 and H55F using the stock Toyota flywheel and clutch.

Is a Mercedes diesel swap legal in California?

Only with great difficulty. BAR requires a same-or-newer engine of the same class and certification type, all of the donor's emissions equipment and a Referee inspection based on the donor vehicle's Smog Check requirements. An OM606 from a 1998-or-later car brings 1998-and-newer diesel smog testing with it.

Does a swap add value?

Sometimes. Well-built OM606 W460s have sold for up to $79,500 on Bring a Trailer, well above typical driver prices, but OM606 240 GDs have also sold for as little as $20,500. The quality of the conversion matters more than the engine code.

Engine swaps change emissions compliance, insurance and sometimes legality. Check your state’s rules before you start. See the disclaimer.
