Head gasket on the 6G72 V6

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME A multi-day jobCOST Gasket kit plus a timing belt; machine-shop work if the heads are warped

Symptoms

Bubbles in the coolant reservoir, coolant loss, overheating, white smoke.

The fix, step by step

  1. Confirm it's the gasket first.
  2. Delica Canada members pointed to a YouTube series that walks through the tests before you pull anything.
  3. Remove the intake, timing belt and heads, have the heads checked for flatness, and replace the timing belt, tensioner and water pump while it's apart.
  4. Buy by part number.
  5. One member's Montero (not Montero Sport) kit matched most gaskets, but the head gasket's water passages didn't line up.
