Replace CV boots (and consider manual hubs)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day per sideCOST Boot kits are cheap; a used axle from an importer if a joint has failed

Symptoms

Grease on the inside of the wheel, a torn or slipped inner boot, clicking at full lock. One Expedition Portal owner had a CV joint break and lose a ball bearing.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the axle, clean and inspect the joint, and fit new boots, packing grease well up into the ribs (the area most likely to crack, says a Delica Canada member).
  2. Lifts increase the axle angle a little, but members say old, dry boots are usually the cause.
  3. Manual locking hubs stop the CVs turning in 2WD, which extends their life; the L400 never had them from the factory.
