Fix a leaking 4M40 injection pump

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ 6–8 shop hours to remove and refit (one Calgary quote), plus bench timeCOST Calgary owners were quoted CA$1,600–1,800 in 2016, including removal

Symptoms

Diesel weeping around the pump, hard or rough cold starts, irregular shifting on automatics, smoke.

The fix, step by step

  1. Find out which pump you have.
  2. Series 1 (to 1997) vans use a mechanical pump, which owners say is prone to leaks but can be resealed and recalibrated in North America.
  3. Series 2 vans use an electronically controlled pump, which a shop told one owner no one in North America can calibrate.
  4. One owner's rough cold starts and irregular shifting cleared up after a pump overhaul, and a Delica Canada member says a new pump front shaft seal 'does wonders'.
  5. Mark the pump timing before removal and have any rebuild bench-calibrated.
