Lexus GX 460 problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Lexus GX 460, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Lexus GX 460 problems to check before you buy

  1. Service history firstGXOR's buying guide puts maintenance records ahead of mileage. A high-mileage truck with records beats a low-mileage one without. Pull the Lexus dealer history on the Lexus Drivers site before you go and look.
  2. Coolant on the bell housingCrawl behind a front wheel and look up at the transmission bell housing. Pink crust there points to the coolant valley leak, which shows up around 100k miles. Also check the water pump weep hole at the front of the engine.
  3. Oil around the filterOil residue near the oil filter and lower engine can be the driver-side timing cover, not the filter. Dealers have quoted $2,600–3,500 because the engine has to come down. Price it in or walk.
  4. Cold-start shiftingDrive it from a cold start for 15 minutes. If it won't shift 3–4 and throws P2714/P0761 with VSC and 4LO lights, you've found the solenoid problem that has led some owners to $7–8k transmission replacements.
  5. Secondary air pump (2010–2013)Failures of the pump and its air injection valves were common on early trucks and can put the truck in limp mode. Lexus extended coverage. Check whether the updated parts are already in.
  6. Center diff lock and driveshaftLock and unlock the center diff. A seized actuator can cost $1k+. Listen for driveshaft clunks. Grease is a temporary fix, and a Lexus TSB covers updated parts.
  7. Rear air springsPremium ('10–'13) and Luxury ('14-on) trucks ride on rear air. Look for sag after sitting overnight and a busy compressor. ClubLexus regulars say failures are rarer than on the GX 470 and fixes are cheap, but check anyway.
  8. Frame rust and radiatorFrame rust is the dealbreaker on salt-belt trucks. GXOR also notes radiators often start leaking between 100k and 150k miles. It's an easy job, but factor it in.

The repairs Lexus GX 460 owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
Coolant valley leakThe coolant level keeps dropping, with pink or red coolant running down the back of the engine and the transmission bell housing. It typically appears around 100k miles on 1UR-FE engines.4 / 5≈ 6–8 hours shop labor, a long weekend DIYAbout $1,500 at a dealer (≈ $200 parts + 6–8 h labor). About $110 minimum DIY.
Water pumpSeepage or crust at the water pump weep hole, often found at a routine service, and a coolant level that slowly drops. Owners have reported leaks from about 28k to 100k+ miles.3 / 5Half a day DIYOne owner paid $688 labor at a dealer, plus about $125 for the pump
Secondary air pump and valves (2010–2013)Check engine light with P2440, P2442, P2445 and/or P0418, sometimes with limp mode.3 / 5≈ half a dayCheck dealer coverage first. Lexus extended warranty coverage on the '10–'13 pump and valves (program ZLH); confirm the terms and your truck's eligibility with a dealer.
P2714 / P0761 cold-start shift problemOn cold starts, especially below about 50°F, the truck won't shift 3–4 within the first 5–15 minutes. It sets P2714 and P0761 and turns on the check engine, VSC and 4LO lights.2 / 5 (fluid side) – 5 / 5 (transmission)1–2 hours for fluid and sensorsOwners cite $7–8k for a replacement transmission. Fluid and sensors cost far less.
Timing cover oil leakOil residue around the oil filter area and bottom of the engine, traced to the driver-side timing cover.5 / 5≈ 10 hours dealer labor$2,600–3,500 quoted by dealers (owner reports)
Rear air spring replacement or coil conversionRear sags after sitting, the compressor runs a lot, or the height-control warning appears. This applies only to trucks with rear air ('10–'13 Premium and '14-on Luxury).2 / 5≈ 2–3 hours"A couple hundred" dollars for aftermarket air springs (owner report). Coil kits cost more.
Add Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain SelectNot a fault. Most 2010–2019 US trucks left the factory without Crawl Control or MTS.2 / 5≈ 2 hoursParts only (factory switches)

Owner questions about Lexus GX 460 reliability

Which years should I buy or avoid?

2014 and later. ClubLexus moderators call air-pump failure common on 2010–2013 trucks and say it should be far less of an issue on 2014-on, though the valves can still fail. 2014-on also gets the spindle-grille facelift; 2020-on Off-Road package trucks add Crawl Control, MTS and a transmission cooler, and 2022–2023 add CarPlay. If you buy a 2010–2013, confirm the updated air-pump parts are in. Lexus changed little mechanically, so condition and records still matter more than year.

Is it reliable?

The core drivetrain has a good reputation. The well-documented failures are leaks and accessories: water pumps, the coolant valley, the timing cover, early air pumps and, on some trucks, the cold-start P2714/P0761 shift fault. Budget for those, and a 200k-mile GX 460 is not unusual.
