Symptoms
The coolant level keeps dropping, with pink or red coolant running down the back of the engine and the transmission bell housing. It typically appears around 100k miles on 1UR-FE engines.
The fix, step by step
- Disconnect the battery and remove the engine cover and intake.
- Unbolt the intake manifold (ten 10 mm fasteners), then the EGR cooler, bypass lines and PCV housing.
- Lift the front of the PCV housing before sliding it forward.
- Scrape and clean the valley plate flange, apply fresh FIPG, then reassemble to torque spec with new gaskets and O-rings.
- Refill with Toyota Super Long Life coolant and bleed.
- Many owners do the water pump and thermostat while they're in there.
