Timing cover oil leak

DIFFICULTY 5 / 5TIME ≈ 10 hours dealer laborCOST $2,600–3,500 quoted by dealers (owner reports)

Symptoms

Oil residue around the oil filter area and bottom of the engine, traced to the driver-side timing cover.

The fix, step by step

  1. Dealers drop the engine to reseal or replace the cover.
  2. One IH8MUD owner documented doing the valve covers, cam towers, coolant valley and timing cover together at home on a 177k-mile truck, working from the factory service manual and labeling every fastener.
  3. It's a big job.
  4. Some owners just monitor slow seeps and check levels at each oil change.
