P2714 / P0761 cold-start shift problem

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5 (fluid side) – 5 / 5 (transmission)TIME 1–2 hours for fluid and sensorsCOST Owners cite $7–8k for a replacement transmission. Fluid and sensors cost far less.

Symptoms

On cold starts, especially below about 50°F, the truck won't shift 3–4 within the first 5–15 minutes. It sets P2714 and P0761 and turns on the check engine, VSC and 4LO lights.

The fix, step by step

  1. IH8MUD's summary thread lists the usual escalation.
  2. Start with an ATF drain and fill, clean the MAF and throttle body, and clean and reseat the related connectors.
  3. Then replace both transmission speed sensors, then the solenoids.
  4. Some owners manually shift the first 15 minutes (upshifting around 2,200–2,600 rpm) as a workaround.
  5. Recent posts report success with a seal-conditioning ATF additive.
  6. Once reverse or 3–4 won't engage at all, the transmission is likely done.
