Jeep Wagoneer (WS) problems to check before you buy

  1. Run the VIN for recalls firstNHTSA lists more than a dozen WS campaigns. Many are rear-camera software fixes (23V-577, 24V-436, 24V-944, 26V-326, 26V-531). There's also an airbag-control software fix (21V-873), a B-pillar trim that can foul the curtain airbag (23V-545), third-row belt buckles (23V-716), door and window trim that can fall off (25V-593, 25V-642), roof-rack crossbar pivot bolts (26V-584) and TPMS software (26V-559). Make sure each one is closed.
  2. Cycle the air suspension through every heightOn an air-sprung truck, run it from Park to Off-Road 2 and back with the engine idling, and look for a 'Service Air Suspension' message. Early 2022 trucks built on or before February 15, 2022 are covered by TSB 02-001-22: unseated air lines, an unplugged control module, disconnected height sensors and even red shipping caps left on the compressor vent hose.
  3. Ask whether the software is currentThis truck runs on software. Bulletins cover blank or frozen 10.1- and 12-inch center screens (radio update TSB 08-039-22), power-steering module flashes (08-202-22) and telematics resets (08-173-21). MotorTrend's long-term Wagoneer was updated at every dealer service. Check the screens, cameras, remote start and app connection before you sign.
  4. 2022 5.7 eTorque: test low-speed stop-startIn 2024 NHTSA opened a probe into reports of 2022 Ram 1500s and Wagoneers losing power, with the engine shutting off at low speed. On a test drive, do several stops and restarts in traffic and note any warning lights. Ask whether any dealer work was done on the eTorque system or the 48 V battery, which sits under the cabin floor.
  5. Know which 4x4 system it hasQuadra-Trac I is single-speed, with no low range. For trails, look for Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II with the 2.64:1 low range. Best of all is the Advanced All-Terrain Group, with a 3.92 axle, rear electronic LSD, 18-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates and tow hooks. A rear-drive Wagoneer is a different vehicle altogether.
  6. Check the oil in the service recordsThe standard-output Hurricane specifies 0W-20, while the high-output Hurricane in Grand Wagoneers specifies 0W-40 (MS-A0921). A Grand Wagoneer serviced with the wrong oil by a quick-lube shop is a reason to ask more questions. The 6.4 also uses 0W-40, and the 5.7 uses 0W-20.
  7. If you'll tow, look for the right packageThe 10,000-lb rating applies to properly equipped Wagoneers. The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package adds the trailer brake controller, hitch zoom and heavy-duty cooling. MotorTrend found the hitch sat oddly high, so they needed a big drop hitch, and the air suspension kept adjusting ride height with a trailer attached.
  8. Price it against a new oneA new 2026 Grand Wagoneer starts at $64,740, so check new-truck pricing and incentives before paying close to that for a used one. Bring a Trailer has sold only one WS so far: a 2025 Grand Wagoneer L Series III for $78,500 in January 2026.

Owner questions about Jeep Wagoneer (WS) reliability

Is it reliable?

Too new for a long record. NHTSA lists more than a dozen recalls, mostly software, camera and trim fixes. Early 2022 trucks had an air-suspension assembly TSB. MotorTrend's long-termer needed only two routine services totalling $330.69 in 20,672 miles. Buy one with the recalls done and the warranty still running.
