8HP75 automatic: fluid and pan service

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hoursCOST Parts plus a scan tool, or a shop job

Symptoms

High mileage, heavy towing or an unknown history. Harsh or slurred shifts are the warning sign.

The fix, step by step

  1. The 8HP75 takes SL076-spec ATF, and AMSOIL lists 9 to 9.5 qt total fill.
  2. A pan drop changes only part of that.
  3. Drain, replace the pan and gasket as RockAuto lists them for these trucks, then fill and check the level by the service manual's procedure.
  4. That procedure depends on fluid temperature, so you need a scan tool to read it.
  5. Overfilling or underfilling a ZF eight-speed causes more problems than it fixes.
  6. If the truck is under warranty, have the dealer do it.
