Jeep Gladiator JT problems: 8 things to check
The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Jeep Gladiator JT, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.
Jeep Gladiator JT problems to check before you buy
- Run the VIN for recalls firstGladiators have had recalls for rear driveshafts (19V-636), manual clutches (20V-124, 21V-028, 23V-116 and 24V-572), EcoDiesel fuel pumps (22V-767, 23V-263), instrument clusters (24V-652) and, in June 2026, power-steering pump wiring that can start a fire with the truck parked (26V-363). Confirm each one is done.
- Manual trucks: ask about the clutchThe clutch pressure plate can overheat and fracture. FCA first issued software, then replaced clutch assemblies under 23V-116, and some 2021 trucks needed a second software fix under 24V-572. Ask for dealer paperwork, not a shrug.
- Drive it at 50–65 mph over a bumpGladiators can shimmy or wobble after a highway expansion joint, as JLs can. Owners on JeepGladiatorForum report dealers replacing the steering damper or the steering box. Any wobble means the front end needs inspecting before you hand over money.
- Diesel? Check the fuel pump historyEcoDiesels were recalled twice for high-pressure fuel pumps that can fail and stall the engine. Look for the recall paperwork, ask about fuel-filter changes and look at the oil level. Diesel trucks are also about 300 lb heavier, so payload is lower.
- Look under the bed and behind the bumpersCheck the frame, bed mounts and spare-tire carrier for damage from off-road use. Check the rock rails and skids for dents that hint at hard use, and the hitch area for signs of heavy towing.
- Know which axle and gearing you're buyingSport and Overland trucks came with 3.73 gears and a narrower 62.9 in track. The Max Tow package, Rubicon and Mojave have 4.10 gears and wider track. Rubicons add front and rear lockers and the 4:1 transfer case. Check the window sticker or build sheet.
- Lifted trucks: inspect the steering and track-bar mountsBig tires and lifts load the steering box, track bars and their mounts. Look for elongated holes, fresh paint on welds, and torque marks that have moved. Ask what was done to correct the track-bar geometry.
- Hardtop and doorsMake sure the Freedom panels, hardtop seals and removable doors come with the truck and fit without leaking. Water stains on the carpet usually mean worn seals or poorly fitted panels.
The repairs Jeep Gladiator JT owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cure steering wobble: damper, track bar, steering box | Front-end shimmy or full death wobble after a bump at highway speed, or a steering wheel that shakes side to side. JeepGladiatorForum owners report dealers finding a weak damper or play in the steering box. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1–3 hours to inspect and fit parts | Parts plus alignment; dealer work if under warranty |
| Replace a leaking Pentastar oil filter housing / cooler | Oil, and sometimes coolant, pooling in the engine valley under the intake and running down the back of the block. The 3.6 Pentastar shares this housing with the JK and JL. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 4–6 hours | Housing plus gaskets, oil and coolant |
| Power steering: recall check, then hoses and reservoir | Loss of power assist, a 'Service Power Steering' warning, fluid weeping from the hoses or reservoir, or a burning smell. NHTSA's June 2026 recall 26V-363 covers 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators whose electro-hydraulic pump wiring can overheat and start a fire, even when parked. | 3 / 5 | ≈ 2 hours DIY; recall work at the dealer | Free under recall 26V-363 where it applies |
| EcoDiesel: fuel-pump recalls and fuel-filter service | Stalling, hard starting or a diesel smell on a 2021–2023 EcoDiesel. NHTSA recalls 22V-767 and 23V-263 cover high-pressure fuel pumps that may fail and stall the engine. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour for the filter | Recall work free; a fuel filter for routine service |
| Manual trucks: clutch recall status, then clutch replacement | A burning smell after slow off-road work or towing, slipping, or a 'clutch overheating' message. NHTSA recalls 20V-124, 21V-028 and 23V-116 cover pressure plates that can overheat and fracture on 2020–2023 manual Gladiators. | 4 / 5 | ≈ A day | Free under recall where open; otherwise a clutch kit and a long day |
| Driveshafts: recall check and U-joint service | Vibration under acceleration, a clunk on take-off, or a squeak from the driveshafts. Recall 19V-636 covered 2020 Gladiators built between December 15, 2018 and June 25, 2019 whose rear driveshaft monoblock joint may have been assembled without grease. Wikipedia counts about 3,427 trucks. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 1–2 hours | Recall replacement free; U-joints or a CV shaft otherwise |
| Re-spring the rear for a real load | The rear sags or bottoms out once a camper shell, bed rack, rooftop tent or trailer is added. Payload is as low as 1,105 lb on a 2020 Sport automatic with 3.73 gears, per Stellantis's specification sheet. | 2 / 5 | ≈ 2–3 hours for rear coils | A pair of coils, or a full lift kit |

Owner questions about Jeep Gladiator JT reliability
Is the long wheelbase a problem off-road?
Sometimes. Breakover is 18.4° on a Sport and 20.3° on a Rubicon, and the turning circle is 44.5–45 ft, so tight trails take more shuffling than in a Wrangler. Rock sliders matter more on a Gladiator than on a Wrangler.
