Re-spring the rear for a real load

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2–3 hours for rear coilsCOST A pair of coils, or a full lift kit

Symptoms

The rear sags or bottoms out once a camper shell, bed rack, rooftop tent or trailer is added. Payload is as low as 1,105 lb on a 2020 Sport automatic with 3.73 gears, per Stellantis's specification sheet.

The fix, step by step

  1. Weigh the loaded truck at a scale first.
  2. Then fit coils rated for the load: support the frame, unbolt the shocks, sway-bar links and brake-line brackets, lower the axle carefully, swap the coils and isolators, and refit at ride height before torquing the bushings.
  3. Check the rear track bar and driveshaft angle afterwards, and re-aim the headlights.
