Power steering: recall check, then hoses and reservoir

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours DIY; recall work at the dealerCOST Free under recall 26V-363 where it applies

Symptoms

Loss of power assist, a 'Service Power Steering' warning, fluid weeping from the hoses or reservoir, or a burning smell. NHTSA's June 2026 recall 26V-363 covers 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators whose electro-hydraulic pump wiring can overheat and start a fire, even when parked.

The fix, step by step

  1. Check the VIN on NHTSA's lookup first.
  2. If 26V-363 applies, the dealer does the repair; until then, park outside.
  3. Out of recall, find leaks with the engine cold: clean the area, run the engine and turn lock to lock, then look at the hose crimps and reservoir.
  4. To replace a hose, drain the reservoir, swap the hose with new O-rings, refill with Mopar power-steering fluid (MS-11655 per the forum's Mopar fluid list) and bleed by turning lock to lock.
