Replace a leaking Pentastar oil filter housing / cooler

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 4–6 hoursCOST Housing plus gaskets, oil and coolant

Symptoms

Oil, and sometimes coolant, pooling in the engine valley under the intake and running down the back of the block. The 3.6 Pentastar shares this housing with the JK and JL.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the engine cover and air intake, then the upper intake manifold and lower intake runners to reach the valley.
  2. Disconnect the sensors on the housing, unbolt it, clean the valley thoroughly and fit the new housing with new seals.
  3. Refit the intake with new gaskets, refill oil and coolant, bleed the cooling system and check for leaks.
  4. Don't over-tighten the plastic filter cap.
