Swap to an aluminum oil filter cap

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 20 minutes at an oil changeCOST About half the $60+ retail price of the plastic cap, per IH8MUD

Symptoms

A plastic cap that rounds off, lets the wrench slip, warps or cracks after many heat cycles.

The fix, step by step

  1. An IH8MUD member found the aluminum cap from the Venza 3.5 V6 fits once you move over the internal parts.
  2. Bend up the two small tabs on the Land Cruiser cap's perforated support tube, push down, turn it about 45 degrees and lift it out.
  3. Watch for the spring and the drain-valve disc underneath.
  4. Fit the tube into the aluminum cap the same way and bend the tabs flat.
  5. Refill the oil, start the engine and check for weeps.

Tools & part numbers
