Add rear air helper springs for towing

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours on a liftCOST $200–250 for one IH8MUD owner

Symptoms

Almost 4 inches of sag at the hitch with a 5,000 lb trailer and about 600 lb of tongue weight, even with weight distribution set up.

The fix, step by step

  1. Raise and support the rear, then disconnect the rear shocks so the axle can drop.
  2. Fit the air bags inside the rear coil springs, route the air lines away from heat, and add an onboard compressor with a union tee if you want to adjust them from the cab.
  3. Reconnect the shocks; the owner needed a long steel bar to compress the suspension enough to line them up.
  4. Run about 35 psi when towing.
