Symptoms
A clunk when you come to a stop, as if you'd nudged the car ahead, and another clunk when you pull away.
The fix, step by step
- Unsealed 4X4 says the clunk is usually dry universal joints, not the transmission or the differentials.
- Grease washes out in water crossings and breaks down under heavy crawling.
- Grease every U-joint and slip joint on both driveshafts about every six months, and again after deep water.
- If the clunk is still there, then start looking at the drivetrain.
Tools & part numbers
- Grease gun with a needle or angled coupler
- quality chassis grease
- creeper.
