Replace a weeping water pump

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ A few hoursCOST Pump and gasket plus coolant; one owner paid for 'a few hours of shop time'

Symptoms

Dried pink coolant trailing down the front of the engine from the water-pump weep hole, and a slowly dropping coolant level.

The fix, step by step

  1. Following the factory manual, drain the coolant, remove the fan, drive belt and anything else in front of the pump, then fit the new pump with a new gasket.
  2. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  3. The build-thread owner also replaced the fan bracket, because its bearing had been sitting in leaking coolant.
