Diagnose secondary air-injection faults

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 1–3 hours to diagnoseCOST Parts plus labor; sensor first, pumps and valves cost more

Symptoms

A check-engine light, often with the slip light flashing and 'Check VSC' on, that may come and go, especially in cold or damp weather. Codes such as P2438 (pressure sensor circuit high, bank 2). Owners on Tundra sites also report P2440–P2443.

The fix, step by step

  1. Read the code before you buy parts.
  2. IH8MUD members point to the factory description for P2438: pressure in the air-injection system is above its threshold, so suspects are the pressure sensor, its wiring or the ECM.
  3. If the light clears on its own, start with the sensor and wiring.
  4. Because the 3UR also powers the Tundra and Sequoia, their forums are a good source of fixes.
  5. Toyota extended warranty coverage on this system for 2007–2010 Tundras and 2008–2010 Sequoias; the Land Cruiser wasn't named.
