Suzuki Jimny JB74 problems to check before you buy
- Check the recall recordEU Safety Gate lists three Jimny recalls: fuel pumps whose resin impellers could swell and stall the engine (cars built 9 May to 22 November 2018, then a second campaign for 12 November 2018 to 7 September 2019), and door wiring harnesses that could break and stop the side and curtain airbags deploying (cars built to 2 December 2020). Ask a dealer to run the VIN.
- Get underneath with a flashlightBigJimny's wiki says every Jimny generation has 'particularly poor rust prevention' from the factory, and the usual spots are the chassis welds and the body and spring mounts. The JB74 is still young, but a truck from a salted-road region should show evidence of underbody protection.
- Drive it at 45–50 mphSteering shake in that band was the third generation's signature fault, from kingpin bearings in a poorly sealed knuckle. BigJimny expects the same on the JB74 because the design is so similar, so test-drive at that speed and rock each raised front wheel.
- Inspect any lift kit properlyA good Jimny lift includes caster correction, a crossmember drop, extended brake lines and often a panhard bracket. Pedders notes the factory headlight-leveling bracket can't simply be extended without risk of breaking. Missing pieces mean someone took shortcuts.
- Do the payload mathUnsealed puts the 3-door's factory payload at about 340 kg (750 lb), which a bull bar, winch, roof rack and two adults can use up. In Australia, check for a GVM upgrade plate or engineer's certificate if the truck is heavily accessorized.
- Big tires without gearing?Anything larger than 215/75R15 really needs lower gearing. Without it, BigJimny owners warn you'll quickly burn the clutch or overheat the automatic's fluid. Ask what ratio changes came with the tires.
- Manual or automaticUnsealed 4X4 couldn't see 'a viable reason to spend the three extra grand' on the four-speed auto in an XL. The manual is the enthusiast pick, and the autos are slower.
- In the US? Ask how it got hereA 2018-on Jimny can't be legally imported into the US until it's 25 years old. CBP's 2022 Puerto Rico seizure ended with an order to bring the truck into compliance, export it or destroy it. Don't buy one with 'paperwork in progress.'
The repairs Suzuki Jimny JB74 owners end up doing
| REPAIR | SYMPTOMS | DIFFICULTY | TIME | COST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnose steering wobble (kingpins first) | A shaking steering wheel around 45–50 mph, play when a raised front wheel is rocked top to bottom with the brakes held, or oil and grease weeping from the swivel balls. | 3 / 5 | ≈ Half a day per side for kingpins | Parts plus labor |
| Fit a 40–50 mm lift properly | Not a fault. The stock suspension rides choppily, sags under accessories and limits tire size. | 3 / 5 | ≈ A day | Roughly A$1,300–3,000 for a kit, per Unsealed's suspension guide |
| Upgrade the GVM for touring (Australia) | A bull bar, winch, roof rack, fridge and two adults put the truck over its factory gross vehicle mass of 1,435–1,450 kg. | 3 / 5 | ≈ A day plus certification | Parts plus fitting and engineering |
| Add a selectable locker | Brake-LSD traction control hesitates or runs out of grip on steep, cross-axled climbs. Unsealed found itself waiting for it to kick in, which cost momentum. | 4 / 5 | ≈ A day per axle at a shop | Parts plus labor |
| Do the first full filter service | Unknown service history, a dusty air filter after gravel roads, or a musty cabin. | 1 / 5 | ≈ 1 hour | The price of filters and oil |
| Replace a worn rear wheel bearing | A hum or rumble from the rear that changes with speed, or play at the rear wheel when you rock it. | 3 / 5 | ≈ Half a day per side | Parts plus labor |
| Rust-proof the chassis and body cavities | None at first, which is the point. BigJimny's wiki says every Jimny generation has 'particularly poor rust prevention' from the factory. The usual spots are the body and suspension mounting points on the chassis, factory welds on the chassis and axles, the boot floor, under the rear seats, the inner wheel arches and behind the side cladding. | 2 / 5 | ≈ A day, plus drying time | Materials plus labor |
