Diagnose steering wobble (kingpins first)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day per side for kingpinsCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

A shaking steering wheel around 45–50 mph, play when a raised front wheel is rocked top to bottom with the brakes held, or oil and grease weeping from the swivel balls.

The fix, step by step

  1. Follow BigJimny's death-wobble order.
  2. Check tire balance first, then rock each front wheel with an assistant holding the brakes: play that remains points to the kingpin bearings, play that disappears points to the wheel bearings.
  3. Check tie-rod ends, radius-arm bushes and the hub face behind the brake disc for rust.
  4. If the kingpins are worn, rebuild them with Koyo bearings, a new halfshaft seal and waterproof grease.
