Fluids, capacities & service intervals
No US dealer will ever service one, so the owner's handbook is your bible. The grades and intervals below are Suzuki's handbook figures as transcribed by maintenanceschedule.com (2021 JB64/JB74 handbook) and jimny.joker.art.pl (2023 handbook for the five-door JC74, which shares the K15B and gearboxes). Capacities come from Liqui Moly's oil guide (Olyslager data) for the 2018–2024 Jimny 1.5 and match the five-door handbook. On a used truck with gaps in its history, BigJimny's rule for every Jimny applies: change every fluid and filter now.
| ITEM | SPEC / CAPACITY | INTERVAL | NOTES & PARTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | SAE 0W-16 preferred; 0W-20 or 5W-30 also approved (API SL or newer, or ACEA A1/B1 or better in Europe) · 3.6 L with filter | Handbook: 20,000 km / 12 months in Europe with ACEA oil (15,000 km otherwise, and in Asia/Australia); 10,000 km / 6 months in severe use (Europe) or 7,500 km (Asia/Australia) | Use a genuine Gen 4 filter.Oil Filter, Gen 4 · BigJimny ↗ |
| Air filter | Genuine Gen 4 element | Inspect at every oil change if you drive on dirt | BigJimny's gen 3 practice of changing it at around 25,000–30,000 km, or sooner in dust, is a sensible baseline.Air Filter, Genuine Suzuki (Gen4) · BigJimny ↗ |
| Cabin filter | Gen 4 pollen filter | About yearly or when musty | Purely for the occupants, but worth doing on a dusty truck.Aircon/Pollen Filter (Gen4) · BigJimny ↗ |
| Spark plugs | Iridium: NGK KR6A-10 or Denso ZXU20PR11 | Handbook: 100,000 km / 7 years in Europe; 30,000 km / 24 months in severe use | The K15B is chain-driven, so there's no timing belt to budget for. |
| Coolant | Suzuki Super Long Life Coolant (blue) · 5.0 L manual, 4.9 L automatic | Blue coolant: first change at 160,000 km / 8 years, then every 80,000 km / 4 years (Europe handbook); the green 'Standard' coolant is due twice as often | Suzuki's gen 3 manuals required silicate-free coolant from 2005, according to BigJimny. Don't top up with a generic green, and if you don't know what's in it, change it now. |
| Manual or automatic gearbox | Manual: Suzuki Gear Oil 75W, 1.2 L · Automatic: Suzuki ATF3317 or Mobil ATF3309, 5.7 L total (dry fill) | Shorten if you've fitted bigger tires | Larger tires without regearing make the clutch and automatic work harder, so fresh fluid is cheap insurance. |
| Transfer case | Suzuki Gear Oil 75W · 1.2 L (Liqui Moly; the five-door handbook gives 1.21 L) | Change on an unknown truck | Gen 3 owners change it every 3–5 years despite Suzuki saying 'never.' |
| Front & rear differentials | Suzuki Super Gear Oil 75W-85 synthetic (Liqui Moly suggests a GL-5 75W-90 synthetic) · front 1.6 L, rear 1.3 L | Change on an unknown truck and after deep water | Replace the drain gasket each time.Differential Drain Gasket (Gen4) · BigJimny ↗ |
| Kingpins & front knuckles | Inspect for play and weeping | At every service once the truck sees off-road use | BigJimny expects the gen 3's kingpin wear to carry over because the design is so similar.Waterproof Grease · BigJimny ↗ |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 / SAE J1703 | Handbook: every 40,000 km / 24 months; flush now on an unknown truck | On manual trucks the clutch shares the brake fluid reservoir (jimny.joker.art.pl). Rear brakes are leading/trailing drums, so check the shoes and wheel cylinders while you're there. |
| Open recalls | Fuel pump (2018–2019 builds) · door harness/airbags (to Dec 2020) | Once, at a Suzuki dealer | Have the dealer run the VIN; recall work is free. |
| Underbody rust protection | Coat the chassis and wax the cavities | As soon as possible, then check yearly | BigJimny: do it while the truck is still clean. Don't wait for rust to start. |
