Lexus LX 470 problems: 8 things to check

The problems owners and specialists flag most on the Lexus LX 470, the repairs they end up doing and what those cost, plus the years and recalls to watch. Sourced, not scraped.

Lexus LX 470 problems to check before you buy

  1. AHC healthCycle the truck through Low, Normal and High and watch it level. Look for fluid at the actuators and lines. Check the reservoir level in High and in Low. One IH8MUD member says that if pressures and heights are in spec, a 7-graduation difference means the globes are shot. A harsh, jiggly ride points the same way. Find out when the fluid was last flushed.
  2. Timing belt recordsThe 2UZ-FE uses a timing belt with a 90k-mile service. Forum regulars say to confirm the 90k or 180k service has been done if the truck is near those mileages, and to have the water pump, idlers and tensioner done at the same time.
  3. Ticks at cold startA tick that fades as the engine warms is often a cracked driver's-side exhaust manifold, which CarSpec calls common on the 2UZ. IH8MUD members warn that the same sound can be a spark plug working loose, so check the plugs before blaming the manifold.
  4. Brake warning lightsThe 100 Series uses a high-pressure brake booster pump and accumulator instead of a vacuum booster. ABS and BRAKE lights plus a warning tone, or a pedal that sinks, mean a scan-tool diagnosis, not a guess. IH8MUD ran a poll on total brake failures, so treat it seriously.
  5. Steering and front endCheck for power-steering leaks at the rack, play in the steering and torn CV boots. Lexus issued a ball-joint inspection TSB in 2002. Confirm that the 2010 steering-shaft recall (2003–2007 trucks) was done.
  6. 1998–1999 throttle gremlinsSlee lists accelerator and throttle position sensor faults on 1998–1999 trucks that can leave the truck not responding to the throttle. Make sure the throttle response is clean on the test drive.
  7. Rust and useForum members report plenty of rusty trucks from the northern US. Get underneath with a light. Like any Land Cruiser, a high-mileage truck with full records beats a low-mileage truck with none.
  8. Starter healthA slow or intermittent crank usually means worn starter contacts. The starter sits under the intake manifold, so it's a big job, and owners usually do it with the timing belt.

The repairs Lexus LX 470 owners end up doing

REPAIRSYMPTOMSDIFFICULTYTIMECOST
AHC fluid flush and bleedA harsh or bouncy ride, dark or metallic-gray fluid in the reservoir, sluggish leveling, or a flush that's overdue (owners say Lexus recommends one every 60k miles).2 / 5≈ 1 hour (owner report)About 2 cans of Toyota AHC fluid (part 08886-01805, $22/can in 2005) plus about $20 in supplies
AHC height-sensor liftYou want more ground clearance in Normal without giving up AHC.2 / 5An afternoon plus an alignmentA can of AHC fluid, scrap aluminum flat stock and an alignment
Timing belt, water pump and 90k serviceThe mileage says 90k, 180k or 270k with no proof the belt was done, or there's a weeping water pump or a rough idler bearing.4 / 5A weekend (about 15 leisurely hours in one write-up)About $600 in parts for a full refresh in one owner's write-up. One owner's 180k service invoice ran about $1,900 in labor, including a snorkel install.
Starter (or starter contacts) replacementClicking or no-crank conditions that come and go and get worse until it won't start.4 / 5Big job: the intake manifold has to come offParts plus labor (contacts kit or reman starter)
Spark plug check and replacementA tick-tick-pop at cold start that can sound like an exhaust leak, a misfire or coil failure. In the worst case a plug blows out of the head and takes the threads with it.2 / 5An afternoonA set of 8 plugs (Denso or NGK) plus coil boots
Exhaust manifold replacementA tick from the engine bay that's loudest cold and fades as the manifold heats and expands.4 / 5Same-day job at a specialist shopParts plus labor (high, because the engine mounts must come out)
Steering rack replacementPower-steering fluid leaking from the rack boots, play in the steering or a heavy feel.4 / 5A full day, with a friendAbout $530 for a new OEM rack bought through a friend in 2013 (retail $700+), plus coolant, oil, power-steering fluid and an alignment
