Steering rack replacement

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME A full day, with a friendCOST About $530 for a new OEM rack bought through a friend in 2013 (retail $700+), plus coolant, oil, power-steering fluid and an alignment

Symptoms

Power-steering fluid leaking from the rack boots, play in the steering or a heavy feel.

The fix, step by step

  1. In the IH8MUD write-up, the oil filter housing comes off first to make room.
  2. It has coolant lines, so be ready to catch about half a quart of oil and half a gallon of coolant.
  3. Then unbolt the column coupler, both hard lines and the rack mounts, spin the rack off the tie-rod ends and work it out through the frame.
  4. Install the new rack centered, reconnect everything, refill and bleed, and get an alignment.
